Classic sites, selecting templates and gadgets doesn't work

posted Oct 12, 2016, 4:57 PM by Robert Wilcox   [ updated Oct 24, 2016, 2:18 PM ]

This issue should now be fixed. Be sure to do a hard refresh (CTRL-F5) to clear any cached JavaScript.

On my Chromebook I had to clear cache and cookies to make it work.

When inserting a gadget or selecting a template the select button doesn't work.

This is occurring when using the Chrome browser. The Sites and Chrome teams are working on a fix. In the meantime other browsers like Firefox can be used temporarily.

Photo Album Alternative

posted Sep 10, 2016, 2:06 PM by Robert Wilcox   [ updated Feb 4, 2017, 5:54 AM ]

Picasa embeds have been deprecated so it is recommended that we move to alternatives for slideshows.

Here are some alternative methods.

YouTube Slideshow

Someone has posted to the help forum an alternative method that uses YouTube.

You can read their instructions here

Their forum post is HERE

And here are some examples:

Note that you cannot add and remove images to your slide show in YouTube. You can only create a new slide show with the images you want to appear in it.

The only way I have been able to make a slide show auto start is shown here

Photo Album Animation

This involves using the animation feature in Google Photos. The procedure is explained by Peggy K, a top contributor in the Blogger forum. You can find her post about this in Google+. She explains about using it in Blogger but as you can see it also works in Google Sites.  You should view her detailed instructions but here is my condensed version:
  1. In Google Photos click the + icon at the top (on mobile click the 3-dot icon)
  2. Select Animation
  3. Click to select each image you want to include
  4. Click the Create button
  5. Click the more actions icon (3 dots) and add the animation to a shared album
  6. Right-click the animation and copy the image URL
  7. In your site click Insert, select Image and then Web address (URL)
  8. Insert the URL you copied in step 6

You cannot change the speed but viewers can click the image to see it larger.

To make a slower animation you can use an editor like LunaPic

You can upload your fast GIF, change the speed, save the image and
upload it to Google Photos, get its URL and insert it into your page.
(Don't forget to move it into a shared album)

Presentations

Another option is to use Google Slides (Presentations). You can edit them to add/remove images.

Example:

Field Day 2

When you insert a new Google Photo the full-sized image is not available: See a work-around here:

When you insert a new Album only you will be able to view it. Visitors will see a blank box.

Warning: Fake Chrome Update

posted Jul 16, 2016, 6:03 AM by Robert Wilcox   [ updated Jul 16, 2016, 6:27 AM ]

I was just reading an article from a link on Facebook and suddenly got a big window labelled "Urgent Chrome Update". There was a "chrome-update.bat" file downloaded. I immediately shut down my computer, restarted it and did a malware scan, found nothing, but when I did a Google search I found that the file will install malware that encrypts all the data on your computer. So BEWARE if this happens to you.

Here is what the fake warning window looks like.
