How many sites can I create?

There does not seem to be any total limit, but you can create only five sites per week. After reaching that limit you have to wait a week before you can create more sites. Deleted sites count in that restriction. If Google did not have this rule they would be inundated with spam sites. If it important that you create new sites right away, make a new Google account and use it to create new sites. You can invite the old account as owner. Another option is to sign up for Google Apps where there is no limit on the number of sites you can create.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of Google Sites?

Google Sites' big advantages are:
  • Quick and easy to use
  • Free - no ongoing costs whatsoever
  • No need to know HTML, CSS etc.
To make this possible Google have added restrictions to Sites to make it safe, secure and easy to use:
  • You cannot easily add your own HTML,CSS and JavaScript
  • It's not hosting - you don't edit in HTML and upload via FTP - it's a system you use in the web browser (I see this as another advantage, not disadvantage)
  • You only get 100MB for a free site, but if you pay for Google Apps for Business you get a minimum of 10GB

How can I make a site with a mobile template?

You can create a site using a mobile template but it is recommended that you create a regular site and set it to automatically reformat when viewed on a mobile device.

But if you want to use a mobile template:

When you create a site, under "Select a template to use" you can click on "Browse the gallery for more". Enter "google official mobile" in the search box. You will see a bunch of site templates optimized for mobile devices that you can choose from.

Why do I see a security warning when I access my site?

When you log into your site for editing the http prefix will change to https for security.  When you refer your friends to your site give them the URL beginning with "http://"  and they will not see that warning.  This applies to personal Google Sites.
This is no longer true, https is the default whether in edit mode or not.
 When you do see the
warning realize that it comes from your web browser and you can ignore it or turn it off. In Internet Explorer:

1. Go to Tools -> Internet Options -> Security
2. Select the "Security" tab -> Click the "Custom Level" button
3. In the "Miscellaneous" section change “Display mixed content” to Enable.

How to remove a deleted page from my navigation?

Sometimes when you delete a page a link to it possibly labeled "Untitled" remains in your navigation bar and you can't remove it. Try this method:
Click 'More', select  'Edit site layout',  click the navigation area to edit it. Put a check in  'Automatically organize my navigation'. Click OK. The link will (we hope) disappear. Edit navigation again and remove tick from 'Automatically organize my navigation'. Save Changes.  The 'Untitled' link will be gone.

For a similar situation in the horizontal menu, 'More', select  'Edit site layout', Click the Horizontal Navigation button to remove it, save everything, go back and Click the Horizontal Navigation button to add it, and rebuild it.

If this does not work post to the forum to see if anyone has a different suggestion. Be sure to mention what you have tried.

How do I map a second site to my domain?

How do I create sub-menus in my navigation?

Edit sidebar
Edit Navigation
Un-check "Automatically organize my navigation"
You will now have to select the pages you want to appear in navigation, they will not be added automatically
You can now click on a page link and use the up, down, right and left arrows to configure the navigation the way you want.

Why can't change the line spacing after I paste text from a word processor?

Word processors (Microsoft Word, etc.) include text formatting codes, paragraph codes, etc. that you can't easily remove using the Sites editor. One way to get around this is to save your Word file as plain text (.txt). Then open the file in Notepad or whatever text editor you have, change the line spacing as desired and copy that text and paste it in.

When I sign in I don't have any edit toolbar, More actions, etc. Why?

You might be signed in with an account that is not an owner or collaborator of the site. Sign out of all Google functions that might be open and try again making sure you are signing in with the correct account. If you are unsure of the correct owner account you can use this form to send a sharing request that will go the the site owner's account. If you still can't sign in delete history in your web browser. If that doesn't help delete cache and cookies also. Click here for instructions on deleting cache and cookies.

Why can't I edit my site after I delete or change my email address?

It seems obvious that if you delete or change the email address that you used when you created a site you will no longer have access to your site, but people do it all the time. I would suggest that if you want to change your email address that you you create a new email address, invite that address as an owner on your site and then ONLY after verifying that you have ownership with the new address you can delete the old address. So what do you do if you have already deleted your account and lost access? You should have created a second owner on your site. Have that owner invite your new address in as owner. If you don't have a second owner please try to re-establish your email account. If it was a gmail account please read this page. If that fails post to the help forum with your site's URL and perhaps a Google employee will be able to help, but there is no guarantee.

How do I make part of my site require a log in?

Page Level Permissions have been added to Google Sites.

Page-level permissions allow you to set different levels of access for different people on different pages. For example, you could allow all your friends to see one set of pages, allow your family to edit another set of pages, and then keep yet another set of pages private only to yourself.

Read more  here  and here

You can also create a new site and keep it private. Invite people as visitors to that site and they will be able to view it after creating a Google account. You can link to the private pages from your main site.

Do invited viewers, collaborators or owners need Gmail accounts?

You DO NOT need a GMail account to access or edit a Google Site: you do need a Google Account, which is not the same. Invited people must make AND VERIFY a Google Account (https://www.google.com/accounts/NewAccount) for the e-mail address they are invited with, then they can access the site. Make sure the user has verified their Google Account before they try to access the site.

Why can't I find my Google Site when I search for it?

It may take weeks or months for your site to appear in Google or other search engines. You can submit your site for possible inclusion to most search engines. Ask other popular sites to link to your site. Read Steegle's answer here

Can I include a PDF or external Web Site in my site?

How do I Invite other people as Owners or Editors?

Use More actions>>Sharing an Permissions and enter the email addresses you want to add. . Persons you invite will receive an email with a link to have them create a Google account which they must verify by clicking on a link in an email they receive. They should complete those steps before trying to access your site.
An overview of site sharing is here and Sharing your site with other people here.

I created a posting with the entire post in the header and now I get 'the requested URI is too large' and I can't delete it.

Someone posted this solution in the help forum:

Create a new ordinary page, and call it "dummy".
Go to More actions, Manage site, Pages (from any page other than the offending one).
Find the offending page, and drag and drop it onto the dummy page.
It will then become a sub-page of the dummy page.
Go to the dummy page, now you can delete the dummy page, and the bad page will go with it.
Re-create the page, being careful not to put the whole post in the title.

What HTML is allowed in Google Sites?

See the list here (The information is no longer available).

How do I transfer ownership of a site to a different account?

Simply invite the new account as owner of the site. After you have verified that the new account has access as owner you may remove sharing to the original account if you wish although I recommend leaving it as a backup.

How can I prevent text and images from overlapping on some computers?

Set site width to a fixed width and it will get displayed the same in every browser. Try 1000 px.

What is adding code to my Web pages?

If you have Avast antivirus installed it has a function called WebRep that adds code to pages you create. You can turn it off if you want. Read this post for a discussion.

Why are the links on my site invisible?

If you use a template that has a dark background the link text color may be set to white. Then if you create a text area with a white background the links will not show up. You can set the link color for the sidebar and the rest of the site separately.  More actions, Manage site, Colors and fonts. Change both link color and visited link color.

How to fix 'A system error has occurred'

If you get this error:
An error has occurred
We are sorry, a system error has occurred. Please try again later.

A suggested workaround to try is:

- Go to Pages > List page by adding /system/app/pages/admin/pagelisting to the end of your site URL
- Find the affected page and click on the revision number (in the Revisions column)
- Go back through the revision history to find the last save without the error and revert to that if possible

More info here.

How do I hide pages while working on them?

If you want to not show the page in navigation until you are ready there are two ways you can do that.

1. More>>Edit site layout
Click anywhere on your navigation and remove the check from "Automatically organize my navigation".
Click OK
Now only pages you select will appear in the navigation gadget.
While viewing a page click More and select Page settings. Check or un-check "Show this page in the sidebar".

2. Or you can use Page Level Permissions and make the pages you are working on visible only to you until you are ready to share them

Advantages of page-level permissions

Set up page-level permissions

How do I put a Back to Top link in a page?

Suppose you have a page like a FAQ page and you want to put links in it to go back to the top of the page.

Get the page URL, like https://sites.google.com/site/sitename/pagename

Create a text link like

<a href="https://sites.google.com/sitesitename/pagename#body">&lt;&lt;Back to top</a>

Edit the page, click the HTML link in the edit toolbar, find the place(s) where you want the "Back to top" link to appear and paste in the link you created.
